Rebtel Review

Rebtel is focused on helping people call cheaply abroad – featuring the expected low rates and an innovative method for making it work.

To use Rebtel, you enter a friend’s phone number online. Rebtel immediately gives you a permanent, local number you can use to call that person. The service works with any phone or phone service, and is simpler than the pins and dialing multiple times required by calling cards.

In addition to being easy, Rebtel is also cheap – there are no monthly fees, and you pay only for the minutes you use. At the time of this writing, those rates were 2 cents or less per minute to China, Mexico, and the U.K., and less than 5 cents per minute to India (with a special that allowed 2.9 cents to India!) To see the current rates, please visit Rebtel’s site.

Although Rebtel is normally inexpensive, it can be free. If you and the person you are calling both live in Rebtel countries (of which there are 50), you can make free phone calls from your regular phone. You make the call, and ask the recipient to call you back on the number it shows on their phone. They hang up, but you stay on the line. When they call back, you have a free international phone call. This is not some hack – it’s just part of Rebtel’s way to to get their name out there. You do have to pay your local phone charges.
