Skype Review

Skype started out as a software program for making free calls between computers. It grew rapidly, and continues to provide this service today – Skype even makes video calls possible.

In addition to the free computer-computer calls, Skype now offers the ability to call from a computer to a landline, or receive calls from landlines on your computer. Finally, Skype can provide you with a number to help enable cheap calling on any phone you own.

All of the Skype services are very inexpensive. They include:

Call regular phones: Long distance and international calls run as low as 2.1 cents a minute, with low prices even for many foreign countries. Skype also offers unlimited calling subscriptions for $2.95/month in the U.S. and Canada, $5.95 to many foreign countries, and $12.95 for a 40 country unlimited calling package.

Receive calls from regular phones with an online number: You can get a number that others call and you receive through Skype. This is $5-$6 per month, or less if you purchase one of the unlimited calling packages. This is especially useful because you can purchase a number that is local for the people who call you instead of in your area, so others don’t have to pay long distance charges.

Get a Voicemail Box: Skype voicemail runs $2-$3 per month, or free with an unlimited calling plan.

Forward or transfer calls to a different number: You can have your Skype calls forwarded to a regular phone. This is charged at the normal per minute rate for number you are forwarding to. This service is also free with an unlimited calling plan.

Skype is a great service for calling free between computers, or per minute when calling abroad. For those who want to largely replace their regular phone service with Skype, the unlimited calling plans run mere dollars per month and automatically include most of Skype’s more advanced features. Additionally, Skype has begun offering a business control panel, making it easy for companies to use Skype and save, particularly on international calls.
